Stockman Curt Pate is a Summit Special Guest

Stockman Curt Pate will join the short list of Special Guests at the Summit in October.

Pate has worked with Dr. Temple Grandin and will introduce her as she opens the Durango conference with her keynote address on October 8. He’ll also attend presentations and be available to offer insights at the Strater Theater and the fairgrounds, sites of the academic and arena presentations respectively.

Take advantage of Early Bird rate and register before July 1.

Pate lives north of Billings, Montana, but travels extensively throughout the year. His 2018 schedule takes him to 10 states and three countries. While Pate has focused his work on livestock and helping ranchers and producers, he’s no stranger to horsemanship clinics and mainstream horse expos.

That’s where he mingled with Warwick Schiller and the two got to talking. “I asked him, do you mentally picture what you want your horse to do before you ask them to do it?” recalled Schiller. “Curt said, ‘no, but I do that with cattle.’ Does it work, I asked. He answered, ‘only when I’m present.”

He blogs regularly and features videos here.

Check out his alternative to the one-rein stop, as reported in Western Horseman.

Read this article in the Washington Post on Pate and low stress livestock handling in which he comments:

‘We’ve got to step out of the human world and become a cow,’ he said. “If you think like a cow, pretty soon you start getting the cow to think more like a human. Farmers who don’t follow those [low stress] guidelines and rush their animals, harass them with noise or prod them unnecessarily risk raising their stress, increasing sickness and lowering production,’ Pate said.

Sounds good, Curt!
